The Post-9/11 GI Bill is codified in 38 U.S.C. Chapter 33. Here's what it actually says:
Public schools: VA pays the full cost of in-state tuition and fees at your benefit percentage. Private schools: VA pays up to $29,920.95/yr (2025-26 cap). The VA also pays a monthly housing allowance based on the DOD Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) rate for an E-5 with dependents at your school's ZIP code.
You qualify if you served at least 90 aggregate days on active duty after September 10, 2001. Benefit percentage scales from 50% (90 days) to 100% (36+ months). You also qualify at 100% if you received a Purple Heart on or after 9/11, or served 30+ continuous days and were discharged for a service-connected disability.
A lump-sum stipend of up to $1,000 per academic year for books and supplies, prorated by your benefit percentage. Paid directly to you at the start of each term.
Active duty members with at least 6 years of service can transfer unused GI Bill benefits to a spouse or children. Requires a 4-year service commitment from the transfer date.
